Free hosting, for two reasons....
(1) On a near-fixed income, I can't afford most paid services
(2) Most of the free services (such as Proboards and the former Zeraboards platform) are actually pretty good at keeping things running well; as free services, they can't afford to have security issues come up, for instance.

I'm on a fixed income as well, but I still find the funds to run my site. If I ever do get in a pinch, several members have pitched in. But, I totally get what you are saying....

There’s nothing wrong with free hosting.

Only two I can think of offhand are ProBoards and Jcink and given the frustrations I've had on various Jcink boards over the years, go with Option #1 on this one, Boogle.

Paid hosting works. Free hosting works. There isn't right or wrong answer as far as this goes. You can have an awesome paid host with no downtime and no issues whatsoever, but you can also have an awful paid host with tons of issues. On the other end, there are good free hosts, and there are plenty of bad free hosts. 000webhost is one I would avoid like the plague.

A host that still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Support was the worst. Took ages if they responded at all. Never again
